If you pay attention to it, there are ways your air conditioner can communicate with you when something is wrong. The following are just a few of the indications that will let you know your AC needs repairs.

Abnormally Loud Sounds

Some sounds, like clicking as the AC turns on and off, are normal. However, loud noises while the AC is in operation usually signify a problem.

Continual clicking can indicate a defective relay or control. Rattling could be due to a loose part or debris caught in the unit. Loose fan blades or fan motors can buzz. Hissing may result from a leak in the refrigerant line.

Musty Smell From the Vents

This is a symptom of mold. The most likely reason is that the condensate drain line hasn’t been cleaned recently and condensation has built up, inviting the growth of mold and bacteria. You may also be alerted to mold if you notice water stains on the ceiling.

Dirty or Humid Air

The indoor air may be getting dirty to the point that it triggers occupants’ asthma and allergies, or the air may be more humid than usual. Both issues can be traced back to poor airflow in the AC unit, so chances are your filters and vents are clogged. An oversized unit is another possible explanation for the humid air.

Lukewarm Air

The condenser coil in the outdoor unit removes the heat that’s absorbed by the evaporator coil in the indoor unit (the air handler). If the outdoor unit gets clogged with dirt and foliage, the blockage will interfere with the process and cause the AC to blow out lukewarm air.

A Short-Cycling Unit

ACs should cycle long enough to reach the desired temperature. If they don’t, then your refrigerant levels may be low, or the evaporator coil may be frozen.
